The Selected Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes
by Arthur Conan Doyle
This project was an entry for Folio Society and House of Illustrations 2018, book illustration competition. The scenes depicted are...
A Scandal in Bohemia, with Irene Adler reacting to the alarm of "Fire!", as her glance gives away where she's about to run to.
The Man with the Twisted Lip, a man sits in his cell, as Sherlock jokes about giving him a scrub that he has in hand.
The Mustgrave Ritual, the butler being pulled from his freshly sealed tomb as the detective peers into the gloomy hole.
The choice of illustrations were simply points I felt had the most interest and whichever could set up the scene in my head vividly (as this is pretty key to communicate). I also liked varying the illustrations in different parts of the story. A Scandal in Bohemia, showing stark contrasts between Irene Adlers window and the black smoke; most rooms in this era were highly decorated and bright white. For The Man with the Twisted Lip, it came down to emotions of the lonely man, and the stories he was about to explain about his life, and trying to get by. And finally the Mustgrave Ritual, though this scene isn’t distinctly in the book (the butler being pulled out from the hole), it is significant and quite grotesque, shocking even.
